The average school motorcoach journey doesn't instill much excitement but for Robbie and Priscilla, the 1998 Thomas school bus they converted into a mobile home has taken them to incredible places.
The couple, known by their Instagram handle Going Boundless, spent a year and a one-half building a dream mobile dwelling that would permit them to enjoy travel without the guilt of leaving behind their beloved cat Mr. Beebles.
"We were our happiest when traveling when exploring new places when trying new foods when immersing ourselves in new cultures," Priscilla told Insider. "It left u.s.a. thirsty for some other memorable feel," she added.
In 2017, the couple began renovations to the schoolhouse motorbus, or "skoolie," with plans to explore the The states and Canada while managing their business remotely.
Priscilla described the decision to opt for a schoolhouse bus rather than a traditional RV equally a witting one, hoping information technology would let them to create a real habitation in the vii-foot by 30-foot space. The mobile home has an open program kitchen and lounging area, chamber, bathroom, and even an outdoor deck.
"We wanted it to expect and experience more like a tiny business firm than an RV. We dear tiny homes and admire the lifestyle of those who live in them, then nosotros thought, why not build one on wheels?" she said.
"Nosotros even added an actual business firm door to requite it that welcoming look," she added, noting that their other homely features include a wood-burning stove, real brick wall, quartz countertops, a farmhouse sink, a washer and dryer combo, and a real drinking glass shower door.
The couple said they accept not yet added up the final amount for the renovation and homely touches simply kept costs down with a lot of DIY. "Nosotros haven't added up all of the receipts yet, but we definitely saved a lot of coin doing the piece of work ourselves," they told Insider.
While the DIY arroyo saved Robbie and Priscilla coin, it was not without its challenges. "We almost quit altogether two times," Priscilla said.
"At one indicate, we actually had listed our gutted charabanc on Craigslist because our windows were leaking and we couldn't figure out how to cease the leak," she added.
Once they had taken care of the domestic problems, the couple's excitement at finishing their project was cutting short when the bus' engine blew a head gasket and was in the shop for months.
In March 2019, after months of countless planning, Robbie and Priscilla finally got behind the wheel and merely "went with the menstruum," heading upwardly the Eastward Declension.
"Nosotros were on the road for almost 10 months and traveled all the manner up to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Nosotros visited 137 different cities on that trip. We didn't have an itinerary," Priscilla said.
As 2020 unfolded, they were set to venture into South America. The couple was able to visit Brazil before COVID-19 caused them to cancel a lot of their plans. "We were really supposed to be on the West Coast at this fourth dimension, but our schedule is a little off from existence home unexpectedly for four months," she said.
As international travel starts to return to normal, with the EU ruling concluding calendar week to lift restrictions on non-essential travel for The states visitors, Priscilla and Robbie tin can start to look further afield for their next adventure.
"One day, hopefully not very far from today, we will continue our long-term travels abroad," said Priscilla. "For now, we plan on finishing the The states and Canada with our buddy Mr. Beebles."
